for Post Typography's Fan Letter

New flash fiction about "that port town where vowels aint allowed".
.
I think I'm going to push the mini chap book format as far as I can with this one (the one where you take a 8.5 x 11" sheet of paper and fold it into a tiny book). It'll be a book example of the DIY culture that Bruce and Nolen of Post Type foster while taking meticulous care in design. Two days in, the initial design is looking good.
.
sample:
.
Ay, Lynch’s brief tryst with the sylph, told now in bar myths and hype, rivals even my spryest forays in Syzygy – that port town where vowels aint allowed. Signs hang myopic over byways. Type erased with rifle and knife. Not a brunch menu or lotto ticket or tattoo with a vowel in sight. Boring, really.

Mohammed Jawad

"In December 2002, when he says he was only 12, he was arrested on suspicion of throwing a grenade into a Jeep carrying US special forces soldiers through Kabul, wounding two of them and an interpreter. He was taken first to an airbase north of Kabul, then to the US prison in Guantánamo Bay, where he remained until his release a few days ago after a ruling by a US judge that his confession had been obtained by force."
.

After Generation X, Generation Zzz?

Nothing new:
.
"The coming month sees the release of two quite different but connected books. Douglas Coupland's Generation A is set in a world without bees and said to "explore new ways of story-telling in a digital world", a description that could be applied to Tao Lin's Shoplifting In American Apparel, whose fragmented approach seems to reflects a new strain of hyper-existentialism where thrills come only from bouts of pointless shoplifting. Post Typography - Lettering & Type: Creating Letters and Designing Typefaces

Post Type invited me to take part in their book release party.

"Lettering & Type: Creating Letters and Designing Typefaces, the new type design and lettering book by Post Typography is coming out in October. To celebrate, Post Typography is having a book launch party on October 29 in Baltimore at the Maryland Institute College of Art. The culmination of this party will be Fan Letter: Twenty-six local, national, and international designers/artists/musicians give a two-minute ode to an alphabet letter or typographic character."

I chose the letter y. The assignment is open - create something that will be shown at the event for two minutes. Time to think...

Routing through old photos/books for the new manuscript, I found this old Lake Howell High School ID from the fall of 1993. It says class of '97. I look very worried.

Publishing Genius - Adam Robinson interviewed in Higher Ed

"This is all impressive enough for someone who is working full time, with another year to go in his MFA program; but it seems fair to say that you would not expect Variety, the trade journal of the American entertainment industry, to take notice of Adam Robinson’s work. But in fact this has happened. Last month, the paper reported that Spike Jonze, the Academy Award-nominated director who is now wrapping up an adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are, had acquired the rights to a novella by Shane Jones called Light Boxes, which Publishing Genius brought out in February.

Variety managed to get the name of the publisher wrong, nor did it bother to correct the error when this was pointed out. It might make sense for Robinson to change to the publishing house's telephone listing to “Genius Press” -- at least if it actually had one."

Young Muslims turn to technology to connect

[CNN] Esra'a al Shafei, a recent university graduate in Bahrain, is young, Muslim and frustrated.

Young Muslims, pictured here in Afghanistan, are increasingly using technology to engage the world.

The 23-year-old says the complexity of who she is as a Muslim is being distorted by extremists and the media coverage of them.
Channeling her frustration, she started Mideastyouth.com, a Web site she describes as a place for young people in the region to "show a different side of our religion" and discuss topics big and small, taboo and not.
