MICA tonight - Secondary Sound

I'm lecturing at MICA tonight. A poetry class is teaching Secondary Sound and the professor wants me to chat about the work. How can I explain that I tried my hardest NOT to write poetry when I created that book? I should just text my entire lecture to everyone in the room from a secret location (like the Mt. Royal Tavern).
GOSH, that's a pretty photograph of MICA.

I had to repost this Slate headline

Silver Standard (construction review)

I'm assuming my book was in the small press ebay auction Kevin Thurston and Ric Royer posted:
"This is a solid little handmade paperback book with a stiff brown paper cover. Both the front and the back covers are stapled multiple times, with the staples forming a grid of 84 squares. These covers are held onto the rest of the book, though only gently, by little strips of magnets glued to the covers of the separate inside book. Inside the book consists of two very distinct signatures, each with its own card cover, which is full on the outside covers but quarter on the inside ones..."

The Blood of My Brother

"The Blood of My Brother tells a story of the war in Iraq from a perspective rarely seen. The primary point of view is Iraqi—a family grieving at the tragic death of its eldest son. After years of hard work, Ra’ad, an Iraqi portrait photographer, has saved enough money to open his own shop. On the night of the opening, while volunteering to guard the ancient mosque in Kadhimiya, Ra’ad is shot and killed by an American patrol."

I watched this documentary on a recommendation and was moved by the sincerity and openness of the film. It's a straight up cinema vérité, no tricks. Much of it is appropriately unrefined. Filming with sharp sensitivity, Andrew Berends captures this family's anguish during candid interviews and we understand the impossible grief of losing the oldest son in such a close knit unit. With no father, the family relies on the oldest son for nearly everything from financial security to spiritual guidance. Berends gains the trust of the local uprising and was allowed to film street demonstrations that few Westerners have the privilege of witnessing.

If you don't know, don't ask

Icepicking your book-face in the gift economy.

Blast from the past

2004? 2005? I remember being very nervous. There was a piece with blue M&Ms doubling as Blue Mass and a poem about Lincoln. I remember Kevin impressing me with his brilliantly composed rambling generated from a collage he was holding. I think. Maybe that was a different reading. Lauren had a fish bowl. Jamie made three people sing. This is all I really remember.

breaking my heart

The fact that the Kennedy Center launched a crisis line for Arts Administrators is really breaking my heart. MSAC just put this recourse on their site for the same reasons. Luckily, Maryland is in the top 5 states for funding the creative community -- hopefully we can keep it that way.

Justification:

New[ish] study shows economic impact of the Arts tops $1.2 billion:
